Most Chinese zodiac pages just list the 12 animals. This tool decodes the specific animal, element, and Yin/Yang combination that makes up your exact sign — and accounts for Chinese New Year so January and February birthdays get the correct animal.
The calculator runs your birth date through a three-layer framework:

Your birth date maps to one of 12 animals — Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, or Pig. We check the exact Chinese New Year date for your birth year, so if you were born in January or early February, you get the previous year's animal (which is correct).
Element calculation
The last digit of your birth year determines your element — Metal, Water, Wood, Fire, or Earth. This doubles the nuance: two Dragons born 12 years apart are not the same.
Yin/Yang energy
Even-numbered years are Yang (active, outward); odd-numbered years are Yin (receptive, inward). Combined with animal and element, this creates 60 unique signs in the full cycle.
